Absa cuts debt review document processing time with AI and OCR

Absa, one of South Africa's largest retail and commercial banks, has deployed an AI and optical character recognition system inside its debt review operations, automating the extraction and classification of documents that previously required manual handling by staff.

The system, which Absa calls the OCR/AI Gateway, went live in late June. Since then the bank reports a 41 percent improvement in document indexing efficiency, with incoming documents and emails now processed within a single business day. Before the deployment, debt review cases required staff to manually receive, classify, capture and process documents from multiple providers before any case could advance, a volume-intensive workflow that created administrative backlogs and introduced human error risk.

The Gateway identifies relevant information from standard document types and routes it into the debt review workflow without manual intervention. Absa said the platform is built to extend to more complex document types as its automation scope expands.

Kendrick Chauke, Absa National Manager for Debt Review, described what changed for the team after implementation: "The introduction of an AI/OCR solution in the Debt Review team has enabled us to automate manual processes and improve operational efficiency." Chauke acknowledged that staff initially raised concerns about how the technology would affect their roles, but said the deployment was structured around removing repetitive tasks rather than headcount, with employees now able to focus on work requiring judgment, expertise and direct customer engagement.

Robert Benvenuti, Absa Chief Information Officer for Data and Applied AI, framed the deployment within the bank's broader AI program: "These enhanced capabilities mark a significant step forward in Absa's commitment to using AI technology to improve customer outcomes and drive operational excellence."

For consumers in debt review, faster document processing has a practical downstream effect, since delays in handling paperwork slow the overall case timeline. Absa said it plans to identify further opportunities to extend automation across its operations as it continues building out its AI and data capabilities.
